Following the launch of OOH Magazine’s very own National Breakfast Awards a year ago, the competition looks set to be even fiercer this time out, with more outlets than ever before – from across the café, casual dining, pub and bar, and hotel sectors – having applied to battle it out to be named Britain’s best breakfast.
Our team of expert judges, however, have taken the time to debate and deliberate the deluge of impressive entries, leaving us with 15 finalists representing the four different sectors:
Cafés: Aromi Caffe in Cambridge; The Bus Café in Margate; Social Pantry Café in London; Urban Pantry in London.
Casual dining: Beastro in Manchester; Ed’s Easy Diner in London; Filling Station in Manchester; Giraffe in London.
Hotels: Café Forty One in London; The Dower House Restaurant in Bath; Hotel Indigo Dundee in Fife; Macdonald Hotel and Spa in Manchester.
Pubs and bars: The Jolly Sailor Inn in Looe; Noel Arms in Chipping Campden; The White Hart in Somerton.
The talented 15 will congregate at Westminster Kingsway College on 30th January 2019 to take part in the live final.
They will then compete in a series of rounds and their dishes will be scored by a panel of industry-leading judges. The awards ceremony will take place later that evening with a £1,000 prize up for grabs!
The 15 will have to recreate the trademark dish that they entered the competition with in the Signature Round, before taking on a box of products supplied by sponsors in the Technical Round. The Bagel Round will then test their skill in conceiving and serving up a tasty bread-based breakfast.
The contestants will have just 10 minutes to prepare, cook and serve their hot breakfast bagel.
The expert judges have also been revealed as Steve Slark, chairman of the Beverage Standards Association; Roy Sommer, chairman of The F&B Managers Association of London; Steve Bell, owner of The Yellow Bicycle Café, who won Breakfast Chef of the Year in 2018; and Mark Teed, food strategy and implementation manager for Star Pubs.
On winning Breakfast of the Year in 2018, Kevin Geyton of the Brigands Inn in Machynlleth told us: “It was a pleasure competing in this environment, but I never thought I had a chance of winning as the other dishes looked so great and creative. When I heard my name it was like winning the FA Cup as I have never even won a raffle before!”
Of the 2019 competition, Henry Norman, editor of Out of Home magazine, said: “We were really proud of our inaugural event, but judging by the quality and depth of the entries, 2019 is set to be even better. We have assembled an incredible array of judges and we look forward to testing and treating their palates to the maximum.”
Running alongside the National Breakfast Awards will be the Bloody Mary Challenge, held in association with TABASCO® and Ketel One vodka.
This will see bartenders and mixologists going glass-to-glass to win an incredible trip to Avery Island in Louisiana, USA, the home of TABASCO®. The 13 finalists include representatives from Butcombe Brewery, Claridge’s and Wright Brothers.
